North Atlantic Salmon Farming Industry
and NASCO Liaison Group

The Liaison Group is an advisory group established to provide an international forum for liaison between the salmon farming industry in the North Atlantic and the relevant authorities responsible for wild Atlantic salmon and aquaculture on issues of mutual interest and to make recommendations for action.

The Group has developed Guiding Principles for its work and Guidelines on Containment of Farm Salmon. Reports are made to the Liaison Group annually on progress in developing and implementing the Action Plans for Containment of Farm Salmon required under the guidelines. In 2001 the Liaison Group established a Salmon Cooperation Group which undertook a project (the SALCOOP project) to review existing cooperative ventures between wild and farmed salmon interests, to identify further areas for cooperation, and to examine options for securing funding for cooperative projects. In order to take forward some of the Group's recommendations a Workshop will be held in 2004 focusing on area management initiatives, restoration programmes and the pros and cons of using sterile salmon in farming and the possible opportunities for cooperative trials.
